New top cop for Scottsdale

The new leader of Scottsdale police is looking forward to the diversity of community and country policing.

Sergeant Brent O’Mahony comes to the North-East after 12 years in the North-West where he has had a diverse career in general duties policing, as a detective in the Criminal Investigation Bureau and most recently in the Drug Investigation Service.

He’s also had a varied life leading into policing. 

Born in New Zealand where he grew up on the North island with Irish immigrant parents, he also spent about five years in Ireland and other parts of Europe, which all counts towards the slightest accent that’s hard to pin down.

He arrived in Sydney in 2000 and worked in the private sector till enrolling in the Tasmanian Police Academy, where he graduated 12 years ago.

He believes that varied life experience helps build rapport with people he meets in his job.

His taking over the reins from Sergeant Andrew Hanson, who left to join Launceston CIB two months ago, is not expected to lead to radical change.

“I’ve got a healthy respect for the team in the North-East and how we all work together.

“One thing we might have a focus on, given the time of the year and road conditions in winter, is road safety.

“Motorists I’d like to see have a good attitude to road safety.

“We’re living in the country, it doesn’t matter if the trip takes a little bit longer, provided you arrive safe,” he said.

Sergeant O’Mahony has set up house in Bridport and is looking forward to being involved in community activities.
