Lucrative catch in Derby

Avid fisherman Darryl Saunders has snagged a lucrative catch, netting a $2,000 tagged trout on Monday morning at the Briseis Mine Hole in Derby.

The self-proclaimed ‘full time’ angler said he was quite chuffed with the fish.

“I was after it. I knew it was a brown trout before I got it in the kayak,”
he said.

Inland Fisheries release two tagged fish a year in the watering hole, with only one caught in 2021 making the odds considerably higher this year.

“The one I caught was actually one of last year’s so there are two more left to catch.”

The Scottsdale local said he built his own transport system to wheel his kayak into the Briseis Mine Hole.

“I made a frame with two wheelchair wheels to help with moveability.

“I’ve been fishing since I was a boy and since I retired, I’ve almost taken fishing up full time,” he laughed.

Mr Saunders said he would use his winnings to purchase a cover for his kayak and for more fuel to go fishing.

“We are sick of eating fish; I’ve caught 30 so far this season but I won’t stop.”

The Minister for Primary Industries and Water Jo Palmer was in town visiting with the cabinet and extended her congratulations for
his efforts.
