After a couple of years of ordinary results, including last year when it didn’t feature in the placings at all, Scottsdale’s Cottage Bakery came away from the pie competition at the Tassie Scallop Fiesta in style.

The bakery has previously won a category and had a minor placing in another, but this year was awarded top place for both its curried scallop and mornay pies.

Manager Vanessa Lodge said part of the result may be down to a change of curry base, but the bakers also took note of judges’ comments about previous entries.

It also helped that the bakery was close to where they were judged meaning the pies could be delivered in top fresh condition.

Senior judge Murray Partridge said the competition was evolving into one that was highly sought by bakers.

“That’s indicated by the start of interest from across the water in Victoria.

“There’s a certain pride in winning these awards.”

He was pleased with the quality and number of entries which are judged blind.
